 Session descriptions

Lightning Roundtables

These sessions showcase the interesting things instructors do in their courses, whether it be an awesome assignment, a fun, in-class activity, or a creative use for an educational technology tool -- things that other instructors could potentially adapt for their context. In breakout room “roundtables,” presenters will briefly present their work and then participants will have the chance to ask questions about implementation details. Participants typically visit 5-6 roundtables during each session.

Poster Session

This virtual poster session features a variety of ways that 91ÊÓƵ faculty, grad students, and staff have advanced teaching and learning methods in the past year. Projects involve the collection of data on student learning outcomes, innovative uses of instructional technology, and/or creative approaches to synchronous and asynchronous activities. Participants will have a chance to interact with presenters directly, as well as contribute to ongoing discussions in Google Docs.Presenters will create a short video to give an overview of their poster for participants to watch in advance of, during, or after the synchronous session.

Plenary Session: Learning at the Intersection of Cognition, Motivation, and Technology: Fulfilling the Promise of Teaching with Technology

will facilitate an interactive keynote session on using educational technology effectively. One of the great promises of educational technology is that it offers new ways to put into practice research findings from cognitive, brain, and learning sciences. With an understanding of some key principles about how the mind works, we can make technology choices that help create memorable, motivating, and effective experiences for our students.

This talk will offer participants a concise introduction to the most important of these key principles, focusing in particular on memory, the development of knowledge, thinking skills, and application of knowledge. We will then consider the ways in which cognitive and motivational aspects of learning intersect, with the end goal of creating learning activities that are engaging as well as effective. Lastly, Dr. Miller will present ideas for choosing and using educational technologies to accomplish these aims, with examples intended to spark new ideas and tap into participants’ own unique teaching goals and strengths.

Dr. Miller is a Professor of Psychological Sciences and President's Distinguished Teaching Fellow at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. Her latest book is .

Quick-Fire Talks

How have 91ÊÓƵ instructors innovated to improve learning? This segment features 5 invited speakers, each with one or more transferable elements one could adopt or adapt across teaching contexts. In this high-octane session, each presenter has 15 slides, each of which auto-advances after 20 seconds (i.e. a 5-minute presentation), to present the essential features of their innovative, effective teaching strategy. There will be a brief Q&A session following.

Intro to the Core Competencies Initiative

What core knowledge, skills, dispositions, and behaviors should 91ÊÓƵ graduates share? National employer surveys show college graduates deficient in key areas, such as oral and written communication, collaboration and teamwork, and intercultural capabilities. The Core Competencies Initiative strives to help students develop these skills through repeated, systematic practice and feedback across multiple contexts. This interactive session will help you identify the competency domains relevant to your course or program and locate resources to support teaching and learning in these areas.

Grad Student Spotlight: Navigating the Faculty Job Market

Are you a grad student who will soon be looking for a faculty teaching position? This session will give you a chance to hear from 91ÊÓƵ alumni about their experiences navigating the job market. After a full-group discussion, the panelists will be available for individual Q&A.
