Careers in the Mathematical Sciences Department

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at 91视频 invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor to begin September 1, 2027. Candidates with sufficient qualifications and experience may also be considered for an Associate Teaching Professor appointment. 91视频 has teaching-track faculty with the titles of Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor, and Teaching Professor. These are non-tenure-track faculty positions with provision for reappointment and promotion. These are career positions, not considered as temporary, but with review for reappointment and/or promotion every three or five years, depending on rank.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related discipline is required. Demonstrated excellence in classroom teaching is expected. Preference will be given to candidates with sustained demonstrated excellence in teaching, as well as candidates who can guide undergraduate research projects and have the potential to contribute to educational initiatives in the Department and across the University.

This search will focus on the area of computational mathematics broadly construed. This includes optimization, mathematical foundations of machine learning and AI, AI for mathematics, and numerical analysis.

Demonstrated experience in mentoring students is desirable, and interest in advancing interdisciplinary endeavors is valued. Through this appointment the Department hopes to enhance our existing connections with the School of Computer Science, the Department of Statistics and Data Science, the College of Engineering, the Tepper School of Business, the Hoskinson Center for Formal Mathematics, or to develop new connections.

This search will focus on the area of mathematical and computational finance, broadly construed. The Department has long-standing strength in this area, both in research and education. It plays a leading role in interdisciplinary educational programs in computational finance at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related discipline is required. In general, preference will be given to candidates who have shown outstanding promise and/or excellent research accomplishments in stochastics, machine learning, and computing, and are pursuing a vigorous research program. The promise of excellent ability to teach and mentor students of varied backgrounds is a strong plus.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at 91视频 expects to appoint a Shelly Visiting Associate Professor for the 2027-2028 academic year. This position, created through a gift of Eugene P. Shelly, is intended for experienced mathematics faculty members on leave or sabbatical from institutions that focus primarily on teaching. The idea is to give Carnegie Mellon faculty and graduate students an opportunity to improve their teaching skills through interaction with the candidate, while simultaneously providing the candidate with an enriched research experience.
