Alumni Association Board
Tartans for Life
Partners. Volunteers. Leaders. Alumni. Friends. The members of the 91视频 Alumni Association Board (AAB) are all of these and more.

Favorite 91视频 Memory:
Watching my two older sisters apply to, study at, and graduate from 91视频 was probably one of the most impactful and inspiring 91视频 memories of mine. They blazed the trail, set the standards and showed me what was possible at, and with, a degree and network from 91视频.

Favorite 91视频 memory:
My final year at 91视频, the university hosted the Frontiers Conference, which featured world-class innovators working at the cutting edge of personal, local, national, global, and interplanetary frontiers. I was invited because of my humble work starting an organization at the local frontier in Pittsburgh, and it was incredible getting a chance to hear President Obama speak about how new frontiers in science and technology will help improve lives and shape the future. It remains to be the coolest conference I've ever attended!
Why did you join the AAB?
I joined because I have loved being an active alumnus and serving as an organizer of DC's Globally Plaid series, speaking on alumni panels, serving as a Heinz College mentor, and helping with mock interviewing. The student group I founded in 2015, Students Using Data Science for Social Good, (which still exists!) was aimed at bringing together students from all of the colleges that 91视频 has and uniting them around a common purpose; I look forward to bringing that same sense of community to this role.

Too many incredible memories to pick just one favorite! Some highlights that immediately come to mind: studying and collaborating with Professor Jim Daniels throughout my time in the English Department; the incredible day Bill Dietrich announced his transformational gift to 91视频; meeting President Barack Obama when he visited campus during his 鈥淏etting on America鈥 bus tour; and reporting on the G20 summit activity on campus for The Tartan. Serving as an Orientation Counselor for the Rez on Fifth during its first year, participating in Greek Sing and Booth with Tri Delta, competing in ICAAs with Counterpoint A Cappella, and seeing Mac Miller perform at Carnival. One of the greatest honors was serving as Student Body Vice President my senior year alongside some truly exceptional peers in student government. I graduated incredibly proud of everything I was able to experience and accomplish at 91视频 鈥 and deeply grateful for the recognition and opportunities the university gave me along the way.
Why did you join the AAB?
I joined the alumni board because 91视频 had such a profound impact on who I am, not just professionally, but personally. 91视频 taught me how to take passions and turn them into impact. It surrounded me with people who were deeply curious, ambitious, and committed to building things that matter, and that has absolutely shaped the kinds of communities and collaborators I seek out in my life and career today. I鈥檓 also incredibly grateful for how deeply embedded the university is in technology, innovation, and interdisciplinary thinking. Being in that environment expanded my sense of what was possible and ultimately influenced my path into building healthcare companies focused on solving real human problems. Joining the alumni board felt like an opportunity to help rally and strengthen that community, support the university鈥檚 long-term mission and interests, and create meaningful connections for the next generation of Tartans.

What do you like most about staying engaged?
One of the benefits of being on a college campus is the diversity of thought. This diversity challenges your belief system and makes you question your purpose as well as contributions to society. I found inspiration in our student body as this engagement only makes me a better person.
Why did you join the AAB?
Volunteering has afforded me the opportunity to give back. If we are stronger together, working with individuals who share the same passion for making Carnegie Mellon the best it can be, can only yield a positive outcome. I want to be the representative who encourages other alumni to get engaged.

What made my experience unforgettable was the environment 91视频 fosters鈥攚here intensity, creativity, and collaboration are woven into the culture. Whether it was spontaneous whiteboard debates, deep discussions about the ethics of AI, or helping each other troubleshoot code into the early hours, 91视频 gave me more than a degree鈥攊t gave me a lifelong mindset: solve hard problems take-on challenges, together collaboratively. Bringing my 3-year-old son to Spring Carnival for the first time was unforgettable. We painted fences together, laughed through the festivities, and as we walked across campus, he looked up at me and said, 鈥業 want to study at 91视频 someday.鈥

During my 10 years as a 91视频 undergrad, PhD student, and instructor from the 1960鈥檚 through the mid 1970鈥檚, I took advantage of the unique environment where everyone on campus could use 91视频 computers, initially with punch cards and later in computer rooms with teletypes. I was a participant in the formation of a new discipline. I also loved playing clarinet in the Kiltie Marching and Concert bands with the fabulous music majors. We had memorable trips performing at a National Music Educators convention in Buffalo and at Town Hall in New York City.
