What is your educational / professional background and how did you become interested in quant finance?
I graduated from Wuhan University with a dual degree in Finance and Mathematics. My interest in quant finance was sparked by a book called 鈥淭he Greatest Trade Ever,鈥 which tells the legendary story of John Paulson during the 2008 financial crisis. Ever since then, I鈥檝e taken every opportunity to learn more about quant finance.
Describe your current role and the most fulfilling aspects of your job.
I am now working as a Delta One trader [a 鈥淒elta One鈥 desk trades derivatives products with linear pay-off like forward contracts, ETFs, and swaps] based in Hong Kong and I cover the China QFII [Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor is a program permitting licensed international investors to trade in China鈥檚 stock/futures exchanges]. Product mandates include equity, ETFs, index futures, synthetic forward, etc. This is an inspiring role where I can consolidate market efficiency and validate my market views over time.
What are the top skills required for success in your role/job?
Innovative thinking is the most critical characteristic needed for my role. MSCF鈥檚 many open-ended projects were very helpful in building this skill set. Even though Delta One doesn't鈥檛 require complicated stochastic pricing theories, the open-ended projects we鈥檝e done at MSCF helped us think out of box. Another key skill set is programming, which is mandatory for junior traders.
How did the MSCF program prepare you for your career?
In addition to learning how to think outside of the box and problem solve, MSCF鈥檚 strong alumni network was especially important and helpful to my career.
What is your favorite memory from your time in the MSCF program?
I really enjoyed traveling with classmates during breaks between each mini session.
What advice would you give to someone considering the MSCF program?
People have a lot of decisions to make in their academics and career paths, but you only need to make the right choice on the most important decisions to achieve lasting success. Joining the MSCF community was definitely one of my best decisions!
